Abstract : Dug-well has been the lifeline for farming in semi-arid region of Jharkhand for time immemorial. Most marginal farmers found it useful because it is low cost and could be renovated easily and water can be used both for agriculture and domestic purpose. Under MGNREGA, assistances were given to marginal and small farmers to construct more durable dug-well with concrete structures. This chapter assessed the impact such dug-well on 159 dug-well owners through individual case study and comprehensive socio-economic assessment. It was found that besides extending the cropping seasons from monsoon to summer, dug-well also helped in enhancing crop yield, household income and reduced indebtedness.
