ASSESSING THE KNOWLEDGE OF ANGANWADI WORKERS REGARDING INTEGRATED CHILD DEVELOPMENT SERVICES (ICDS) IN TRIBAL AND NON-TRIBAL BLOCK OF VALSAD DISTRICT, GUJARAT
Abstract : Children are our most precious resources and are the citizens of tomorrow, so nurturing our children is an investment. Hence, we should ensure a brilliant future for our children. ICDS in India is worlds unique and largest integrated early childhood program with over 12.4 lakhs centres nationwide. It was launched on 2nd October 1975, on the 106th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, The Father of our Nation. ICDS is the symbol of India's commitment to her children [1]. It provides an opportunity for the holistic development of children from vulnerable backgrounds. The average Indian child has a poor start to life i.e., infant & under 5 morality rates of Indian children are 49% and 65% respectively and are higher than the developing country average. One in four newborn is under weight. Only one in three is exclusively breast fed. One in two children less than five years of age suffers from moderate or severe malnutrition. One in three children does not get a full course of immunization. 44% of India's people live on less than Rs50 per day. Less than 30% have access to adequate sanitation facilities. The major factor is the countries high Maternal Morality Ratio of 540 deaths per one lakh lives birth [2].
