Abstract : Endocrine glands produce hormones. These glands secrete their contents directly into the extracellular fluid or blood stream. These substances can have an effect on adjoining cells or be transported through the bloodstream to act on various organ systems or specialised cells in the body, assisting in the maintenance of homeostasis. The pituitary gland is located in the hypophyseal fossa of the sphenoid bone and is connected to the brain by a stalk that is continuous with the hypothalamus.
