Abstract : The initiation of pharmacological responses is determined by drug absorption and distribution, whereas the duration and degree of action are determined by redistribution and elimination rate. The principal mechanism for removing a drug from the body is elimination, which involves two processes: biotransformation and excretion.
Drug biotransformation/metabolism is the chemical transformation of one form into another. Chemical instability of a medicine within the body is not included in the concept, such as the breakdown of penicillin by stomach acid to penicillenic acid.
