Abstract : Ammonium chloride is evaluated using an indirect test technique. The sample is dissolved in water and treated with a formaldehyde solution that has been previously neutralised (Methyleneimine is produced, which polymerizes into hexamine). This results in an equivalent quantity of HCl being released as NH4Cl. Using phenolphthalein as an indicator, the freed HCl is titrated with a standard solution of NaOH; the development of a faint pink colour indicates the end point.
