The emergence of a "Global Economy" with rapid changes due to advances in technology and social issues has created an urgent need for "Research & Development" (R&D) to be used as a means to develop sustainable economic growth. As we move towards a more integrated and collaborative society there is less separation between "Academics," "Industry," and "Policy." An example of this integration can be seen through the various authors included in this current edition of Global Trends in Research and Development: Bridging Academia, Industry and Policy.
In addition to examining what trends are currently being researched regarding R&D globally, the editors have also examined digital technologies, innovation strategies, industry-based research initiatives, and policy developments which support the growing trend of working collaboratively. The contributors of this publication have provided a variety of examples using both conceptual analysis, empirical research, and case studies to explain how each sector supports or influences other sectors.
One major difference about this publication is it emphasizes collaboration between the three sectors -- academics, industry and government. While academics continue to pursue theoretical research, they are now actively involved with industry in translating research into real-world applications. Government officials are helping create an environment that fosters innovation and regulates new/emerging technologies, and helps address socio-economic issues. To ensure research results are both innovative and applicable, the three sectors must collaborate.
Another key aspect of this publication is it addresses the importance of international perspectives while at the same time acknowledging regional/local contexts. For example, emerging economies require a greater alignment of research with industry needs and policy priorities than do developed countries. Emerging economies face many challenges including sustainable development, health care accessibility, and digital inclusion. This publication presents information from a wide range of geographic locations and disciplines in order to facilitate a broader understanding of global R&D trends.
Finally, this publication intends to generate discussion and collaboration among researchers, practitioners, and policy makers. Additionally, the publication emphasizes the use of multi-disciplinary approaches to solve problems that cannot be solved by using single discipline approaches. Also, the publication encourages the sharing of ideas across traditional boundaries. Finally, the publication provides knowledge that will be useful as both an academic reference and a practical reference for decision making and strategic planning.
